Prospective Graduate Student FAQ

We are waiving the GRE requirement for Fall 2022 applications due to testing difficulties during the pandemic. This policy may change in future semesters, so the field is still required in the application. If you do not have GRE scores, you can put in a testing date for that field.

The priority application deadline for Fall semesters is January 10th and the priority application deadline for Spring semesters is July 1st. We will still review applications that come in after the priority deadline, but preference will be given to students that apply by the priority deadline.

The priority application deadline means that applications submitted before that date will be considered before other applications, we frequently will still accept applications after the deadline. Keep in mind, however, that the closer to the start of the semester, the less likely that you will be able to receive any form of funding and the less likely that any immigration documents will be processed in time.

All students that apply are considered for assistantships, but not all admitted students will be offered funding. Funded positions typically go to Ph.D. students, but there are occasional positions available for Master’s students. Assistantship positions are dependent on availability of funds as well as faculty interest and research openings.

Depending on the strength of your application, you may be considered for conditional admission based on the requirement that you complete certain undergraduate level courses within your first semester at WSU and earn at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses.

You may also be considered for the NADC program.

TOEFL/IELTS scores are required for all international student applications with some minor exceptions. We are unable to accept Duolingo or other English assessment tests.

There are rare exceptions to submission of the scores due to testing difficulties, but this is not common.

We do not publish a minimum required GRE score, they are considered holistically with the rest of the application.

The Graduate School requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission, however there are occasional exceptions in extraordinary circumstances. There are also options such as NADC or the WSU Bridge Program for students with lower undergraduate GPAs.

The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7 and the minimum internet TOEFL score for our program is 93. We can admit excellent applicants with lower scores in certain cases, but this is not standard.

There is no set date for when a final decision will be reached for any applicant. Please know that we are processing applications as quickly as possible, but this department receives hundreds of applications every semester and they take quite a lot of time to manage.

Official transcripts will only be required if you are admitted. When sending official transcripts from schools located in non-English-speaking countries, each institution must submit both the English translation plus an original language record. These documents must be in a stamped and sealed envelope when delivered to the Graduate School to be considered “official.” These documents can be mailed to:

Graduate School Admissions
French Administration, Room 324
Washington State University

The I-20 documents are processed by the Graduate School as quickly as they are reasonably able to do so. Once your documents have been completed, they contact the department for shipping. The department will contact you to verify your mailing address and they will tell you your tracking number once your I-20 is prepared to ship.

WSU is in the process of making I-20 documents available to new students digitally, so you may be emailed a copy of your I-20 or you may be able to download it yourself through myWSU.

Have your testing center submit scores to WSU’s Institutional Code – 4705.
