Prospective Graduate Student FAQ

  • Is the GRE required? 🡅
    • We are waiving the GRE requirement for Fall 2022 applications due to testing difficulties during the pandemic. This policy may change in future semesters, so the field is still required in the application.  If you do not have GRE scores, you can put in a testing date for that field.
  • What is the application deadline? 🡅
    • The priority application deadline for Fall semesters is January 10th and the priority application deadline for Spring semesters is July 1st. We will still review applications that come in after the priority deadline, but preference will be given to students that apply by the priority deadline.
  • It is past the priority application date, will you still accept my application? 🡅
    • The priority application deadline means that applications submitted before that date will be considered before other applications, we frequently will still accept applications after the deadline. Keep in mind, however, that the closer to the start of the semester, the less likely that you will be able to receive any form of funding and the less likely that any immigration documents will be processed in time.
  • Is there a separate application for assistantship positions? 🡅
    • All students that apply are considered for assistantships, but not all admitted students will be offered funding. Funded positions typically go to Ph.D. students, but there are occasional positions available for Master’s students.  Assistantship positions are dependent on availability of funds as well as faculty interest and research openings.
  • Will you consider my application if I do not have the recommended prerequisite courses? 🡅
    • Depending on the strength of your application, you may be considered for conditional admission based on the requirement that you complete certain undergraduate level courses within your first semester at WSU and earn at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses.
    • You may also be considered for the NADC (https://gradschool.wsu.edu/chapter-four-c/) program.
  • Do I need to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores? 🡅
    • TOEFL/IELTS scores are required for all international student applications with some minor exceptions (https://gradschool.wsu.edu/international-requirements/). We are unable to accept Duolingo or other English assessment tests.
    • There are rare exceptions to submission of the scores due to testing difficulties, but this is not common.
  • What is the required GRE score? 🡅
    • We do not publish a minimum required GRE score, they are considered holistically with the rest of the application.
  • Will I be admitted if my cumulative GPA is less than 3.0? 🡅
    • The Graduate School requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission, however there are occasional exceptions in extraordinary circumstances. There are also options such as NADC or the WSU Bridge Program (https://ip.wsu.edu/future-students/intl-masters-program/) for students with lower undergraduate GPAs.
  • Will I be admitted with a low TOEFL/IELTS score? 🡅
    • The minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7 and the minimum internet TOEFL score for our program is 93. We can admit excellent applicants with lower scores in certain cases, but this is not standard.
  • When will my application be processed? 🡅
    • There is no set date for when a final decision will be reached for any applicant. Please know that we are processing applications as quickly as possible, but this department receives hundreds of applications every semester and they take quite a lot of time to manage.
  • Do you require official transcripts? 🡅
    • Official transcripts will only be required if you are admitted. When sending official transcripts from schools located in non-English-speaking countries, each institution must submit both the English translation plus an original language record. These documents must be in a stamped and sealed envelope when delivered to the Graduate School to be considered “official.” These documents can be mailed to:
