Each project is selected to introduce Risk in the form of skills or expertise that the students do not have. The first one of these is programming in C# which they have not done before.

Developing skills for and values concerning lifelong learning is an essential result of this course. There are several manifestations. First, in discussing programming languages strong emphasis is placed on the point of view that the primary purpose is to learn different choices that are made in language design so that new languages become more approachable. Second, beginning with the third programming assignments students have to acquire much of what they need about the specific language being used by researching language documentation, etc. that is not provided by the instructor. To succeed in the projects the students must make use of these resources.

Projects require students to learn new and varying concepts and domain specialties. They have to investigate and master new technologies and APIs that they were unfamiliar with the start of the project.

Students overall performed very well on assignments and exams. The following are quantitative measures for each assignment and exam:

HW 1 - average: 95%;
HW 2 - average 96%;
HW 3 - average: 98%;
HW 4 - average: 92%;
HW 5 - average: 98%;
HW 6 - average: 93%;
HW 7 - average: 85%.
Exam 1 - average: 87%;
Exam 2 - average: 85%;
Final Exam - average: 81%.
Term paper - average: 86%.

Note that the average on exams and homeworks were in the B range or higher.

Each project required students to learn new and varying concepts and domain specialties. Additionally, they had to investigate and master new technologies and APIs that they were unfamiliar with the start of the project. They did this well and reinforce the need for continued learning and development.
PNNL, had to become familiar with Chemical processes and chemical process modeling.
The Boeing group had to learn about adhoc wireless networks.
The Ugi group all had to become more proficient with both Linux and Windows programming.

The material covered in CS 470 demonstrates to students how engineering and computer science impact the biotechnology industry and, in turn, how the biotechnology industry impacts the world. The global impact of biotechnology on health care, agriculture, medicine, and the food industry are discussed.

For the second project, each student was asked to report on biotechnology research being performed at WSU. As part of the project they had to determine the motivation and/or impact of the research on people and/or economies worldwide and include this information in their presentations. All eighteen students did this.
