Class Information
Objectives: 
  • To give engineering  computer science students the knowledge they need to work effectively as engineers and computer scientists in the biotechnology industry
  • To help students develop lifelong learning skills
  • To help students improve their presentation and communication skills
Structure: 

Students are assigned two research projects.  The topic is specified, but students choose the particular subject according to their interests.  Students have approximately one month to complete each project which includes preparation of an oral presentation to be delivered in class.

Topics: 
  • Introductory material
  • Fundamentals of biological sciences (including biochemistry, genetics, proteins, cell biology)
  • Evolution, ecology, the culture of biology (in comparison to engineering and computer science) and current research
  • Biotechnology techniques and applications
  • Tour of wet lab
