Class Information
Objectives:

Introduction to software systems development with emphasis on requirements analysis, specification, design and project and risk management. Students will participate in a semester long project to give them hands-on experience with software engineering principles. The objective is to experience a particular method for the systematic development of large software systems. Students will learn what it takes to build real software products.

Structure:

The course is built around an individual semester long design project. Several group activities are also required including the drafting of a software development process guide.

Topics:
  • Introduction to software engineering: systems engineering, project management
  • Software development processes.
  • Project scheduling and cost estimation/tracking
  • Management: Managing people, software cost estimation, quality management, process improvement
  • Project Risk assessment and mitigation
  • Requirements engineering (elicitation), analysis and system models
  • Requirements definition and specification and software prototyping
  • Formal software specification including algebraic and model based techniques
  • Software design, architecture design and object-oriented design
  • Function-oriented, real-time systems and user interface design
