GridStat: Next Generation Communication Services for the Electric Power Grid (www.gridstat.net)

  • Objective:

    • Help remove the lack of situation awareness in the electric power grid, which has been a major contributor to most or all recent major blackouts
  • Technologies:

    • Flexible, robust, and secure middleware to deliver operational data (augment & replace SCADA).
    • Efficient support for multicast (1:many), phasor measurement units, different network underlying technologies, rate filtering
    • Support for changing routing tables quickly and data load shedding in a contingency.
  • Uniqueness:

    • A new and novel kind of publish-subscribe middleware that has a highly manageable infrastructure data delivery plane with a hierarchical management for policy control
    • Designed specifically for the power grid’s requirements, in PNNL & INL starting July 07
  • PIs: Dave Bakken, Carl Hauser (CS); Anjan Bose (EE)

    • PNNL POCs Jeff Dagle (power), Ross Guttromson (EIOC), Dr. Deb Frincke (security)
  • Sponsors: DoE, NIST, DHS, Avista, NSF
