The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

REU Program off to a Great Start

This REU program is sponsored by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University. The program consists of 10 weeks working with top research professors and graduate students at WSU. During this time, REU participants will assist in designing smart environments. In addition to taking a 3-hour research methods course, participants will perform hands-on research on topics including design of sensor networks, middleware, machine learning algorithms, and automation algorithms, and will investigate applications of smart environments to health monitoring and energy conservation.

Most research ideas will be tested using two on-campus smart environments, and students will present their research results in a poster session at the end of the ten week period. Travel support is available for students who submit their work to a research-related conference. This WSU/EECS REU program is funded by National Science Foundation.

The ten participating students each year will have opportunities to engage in a wide variety of research projects related to smart environments. Some examples of the projects that student's can participate over the course of the REU are as follows:  Collect and Visualize Inhabitant Data, Inhabitant Modeling and Prediction, Pervasively Secured Infrastructures, Automated Decision Making for Smart Environments, Middleware, Natural Interfaces for Smart Environments, Mixed-signal Integrated Circuit Design and Low Power Sensor Circuits, Low Power, and High Data Rate Wireless Link for Sensor Networks, Energy Efficiency, and Smart Environments to Support Aging in Place.

This year’s ten participants are Erin Buehler (EWU), Benjamin Burnett (Weber State University), Kelsey Cairns (Portland State University), Seun Deleawe (University of North Texas), Luciana Diamente (California State Polytechnic University), Desmond Eskridge (Alcorn State University), Rachelle Goll (Truman State University), Anthony La (WSU), Vy-Hoa Le (University of Portland),  and Kjerste Tangvald (WSU).
